KPN and Breens Network join forces for safety of hybrid education

KPN and Breens Network have joined forces in creating a dedicated cybersecurity solution for all educational institutions. They have done so by bundling KPN’s existing security knowledge with the expertise and experience of Breens Network as an educational IT organisation.

By means of this initiative, KPN and Breens Network are answering a call made by the AIVD/ National Cyber Security Centre and the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science / Education Inspectorate to strengthen the education industry’s digital resilience against cyber threats.¹

Security threats increasingly complex, damaging and more frequent

Over the past few years, there has been a marked increase in the volume of remote working and learning, further intensified by the Corona pandemic which has significantly boosted the use of digital learning resources. This leap forward in hybrid education is essential in enabling students to realise their social potential.

Increasing digitisation is transforming educational institutions into treasure troves of personal data and socially relevant information, making students and schools lucrative targets for hackers. Educational institutions are at constant risk of information theft and unauthorised use of data, including the personal data of students and staff. Last summer, market research agency Kantar studied the enormously increased number of cyber-attacks directed at educational institutions in the Netherlands. By hacking, criminals have the potential of completely paralysing educational institutions, resulting in severe social and financial damage to schools and their administrators and, possibly, negative effects for students as well. In short, security threats are becoming increasingly complex while the number of cyber-crime incidents keeps growing. ¹

Dedicated cybersecurity solution for the education industry

To combat this increasing risk, KPN and Breens Network are now joining forces with the field of education in creating an affordable cybersecurity solution to meet the demands of the educational institutions. In doing so, the partnering organisations are basing their efforts on standard building blocks already applied in education and by KPN. Educational institutions will be enabled to strengthen their resilience in a step-by-step process and by using these separate building blocks. By offering an Education ICT Security Assessment” in combination with an extensive “Detection and Solution software module” (XDR), KPN and Breens Network offer these institutions essential insight into the vulnerabilities of their IT systems. Furthermore, this cybersecurity solution facilitates appropriate reporting by the educational institutions to the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science as well as to other stakeholders.

This solution provided by KPN and Breens Network will enable educational institutions to take the necessary steps in improved cybersecurity indicated as essential by the Dutch House of Representatives and the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. This will allow educational institutions to guarantee the provision of online (hybrid) education which is safe for both students and staff.
